FAQs

This section addresses some of the most commonly asked questions about energy healing.

What is Energy Healing?

Many of the certifications relating to my practice are referred to as Energy Healing.

Energy Healing is a term used to describe various holistic methods and complementary therapy techniques that access, channel and shift energy to achieve a state of energetic balance and awaken the body's natural ability to heal, which ultimately supports overall health and wellbeing. Some modalities and techniques are hands-on, while others are not. Many seek to establish a body-mind-spirit connection, a connection between the conscious, unconscious and subconscious minds, and a connection to everything around us in order to better navigate our personal energy and, ultimately, better navigate day-to-day living.

What is Personal Energy Care & Spirit Wellness and Why is it Important?

Personal Energy Care & Spirit Wellness™ offers experiential mindful movement and conscious relaxation practices, and the sharing of information about these practices to help you understand and feel better in your body. The methods and techniques of these practices are natural, gentle and non-invasive. The aim is to help you deeply connect to the inherent wisdom of your being as a whole, and to create shifts in your body's natural systems to help restore harmony to your body, mind, emotions & spirit.

The practice of Personal Energy Care & Spirit Wellness™ is built upon a foundation of curiosity along with the desire to explore natural health and wellness concepts and practices, while referring to current research, anecdotal evidence, and certain concepts of quantum physics, metaphysics and science as they relate to the human being as a whole.

Having a Personal Energy Care & Spirit Wellness routine is important based upon the following core beliefs of my practice:

  • you are a human being who is navigating a human experience, and because of your individual uniqueness and the individual uniqueness of others, along with everything that is going on in the world around you, a human experience is a truly wonderful, beautiful, delicate, intricate and sometimes challenging experience;

  • an animating, vital life force energy is the literal breath of life for the human body, and without this vital life force energy, we cease to exist...different traditions and cultures have referred to this energy as universal life force energy, prana, chi, qi or mana, to name a few;

  • our body's natural energy systems (e.g., chakras, nadis/meridians, aura/bioenergy field) receive, house, process and express vital life force energy, and move vital life force energy throughout and around the body;

  • the health and balance of our body's natural energy systems heavily influence the health and balance of other systems and constructs of the body (e.g., nervous system, glands, organs, tissues, etc.), and therefore influence our overall health and wellbeing;

  • energy constantly shifts from one state to another...our personal energy is fluid and changeable, and is impacted daily, and often without our awareness (e.g., electromagnetic frequencies, sound frequencies, light frequencies, geomagnetic frequencies, etc.);

  • when we do not take measures to manage and balance our energy on a regular basis, this may lead to imbalance (e.g., depleted energy, stagnant/blocked energy, excess energy) and, ultimately, greater issues that may present as body, mind, emotional or spiritual discord (e.g., lack of quality sleep, headaches, migraines, tension, worry, anxiety, stress-related illness, disease, emotional overwhelm, exhaustion, discord with others, weight issues, difficulty focusing, trauma-related numbness and disconnect, personal boundary issues, and confusion and lack of clarity); and

  • every minute of every day, each of us is navigating some kind of energetic shift or another, and that isn't "good" or "bad" or anything in between...it simply means that we are human.

What should I expect during and after a Personal Energy Care & Spirit Wellness session?

An in-person Personal Energy Care & Spirit Wellness session takes place with the individual fully clothed and laying on a treatment table or on a yoga mat on the floor. Sound and ambient, low lighting are often used during a session. Scents may be experienced in the space from essential oil, sage or palo santo having been used in the space and general areas accessing the space. Physical touch will be addressed individually in each session, taking into account both the recipient's comfort level and the practitioner's comfort level.

For Reiki, the practitioner calls in and directs the flow of energy into the recipient's body through a series of gentle hand placements on or slightly above certain areas of the body. Hand positions are provided in training; however, a practitioner may use a more intuitive approach or an approach more conducive to comfortably accessing and treating any particular area

For Crystal Reiki, crystals are placed on or around certain areas of the body, taking into account the recipient's comfort level, and the practitioner may also use tools such as a wand or a pendulum, in addition to Reiki.

Yin and Restorative Yoga are practices of very gentle mindful movement paired with longer held (5+ minutes), prop-supported poses and shapes that encourage deep relaxation of the body and mind. The participant will be on a mat and close to the ground for this practice, shifting through the poses from a seated position, kneeling, hands and knees, or from a laying down position. Effort is minimal; however, some gentle movement is involved.

Hatha Yoga is an active effort practice that involves mindful movement focused on experiencing the body in different shapes and poses. Time is taken to setup in each shape or pose, be in each shape or pose and to transition from one shape or pose to another. Props and different relationships to gravity may be used to assist the body in moving in different ways and to bring awareness to different parts of the body. This practice may involve standing, bending, twisting, sitting, kneeling, working from a quadriped position or laying down on the floor.

For Reiki Sonics/Sound Wellness, musical instruments are played in the space and around a person's body. These instruments create vibrations and frequencies that help to return the body's natural systems to a state of balance and harmony. The recipient may be on a treatment table or on the floor on a yoga mat.

A recipient's experience during and following a session will be individually unique. Previous clients have reported:

  • a sense of stillness, peace and deep relaxation

  • physical sensations such as warmth or coolness, tingling or whooshing

  • rising emotion or emotional release

  • deeper meditative experiences, seeing images, visions or bright colours

  • yawning, clearing the throat, coughing, runny nose

  • gurgling in the tummy or other areas of the body

  • increased periods of quality sleep

  • grounded with a restored and balanced flow of energy

  • a deeper connectedness to and awareness of oneself

  • reconnection to spirit, spiritual awakening

  • a reduction and alleviation of physical pain

  • feeling lighter and refreshed, with an increase in mental clarity

  • feeling emotionally balanced

  • feeling nothing

Some clients have also reported experiencing the phenomenon of "phantom hands" which feels as if the practitioner's hands are touching one area of the body when they are actually touching a different area of the body or may not be touching a person at all. Some believe that this is a special blessing as the hands of an ascended Reiki Master or a healing spirit is assisting with the treatment.

If a Personal Energy Care & Spirit Wellness experience is more intense, a recipient may experience more intense detox-like symptoms during or after a session, which could include:

  • emotional release or rising emotions coming forward to be processed

  • light-headedness, dizziness or headache

  • building pressure in the body

  • stomach or digestion discomfort, a need to use the washroom, nausea

  • fatigue or tiredness

  • feeling heavy

  • night sweating

These more intense symptoms are an indication of the release of trapped or stagnant energy, the clearing of that energy and treatment integration. A person may experience these symptoms for a period of 24-72 hours following a session. Much like other forms of detox, once the symptoms clear, a person will ultimately feel much better overall.

It is recommended that one be gentle with oneself following a Personal Energy Care & Spirit Wellness session to allow for the energy shifts to integrate. Avoid heavy meals, junk food, stimulants, alcohol, strenuous exercise, loud music, and be sure to drink plenty of clean water. The human body is largely made up of water which is an excellent medium for moving energy throughout the body to integrate the energy work. Water also helps to hydrate, purify, cleanse and detoxify the body to the deepest level of one's being.

How should I prepare for a Personal Energy Care & Spirit Wellness session?

Wear comfortable, relaxing clothing without bulky buttons, zippers or belts. Avoid heavy foods, junk food, stimulants, caffeine and alcohol. Drink a glass of clean water prior to the treatment and plan to drink plenty of clean water following the treatment to assist your body with the integration of the energy treatment. Plan to "unplug" and treat yourself to the gift of downtime, rest and rejuvenation. Take a few deep breaths and look forward to experiencing a deeply meditative, immersive energetic experience.

How often should I practice Personal Energy Care & Spirit Wellness?

Daily! Our energy bodies are literally being affected every minute of the day, and we can each take personal steps to manage our energy.

Depending on how you are feeling and what you are going through, you may find that support by way of regular monthly scheduling helps you to more easily navigate day-to-day living. There may be times when you are working through a period of intense grief and sorrow, or frustration and upset. At these times, you may wish to attend more often, such as once a week. When working with energy concerns such as stress, chronic pain, high blood pressure, illness, disease, etc. that have developed as a result of prolonged imbalance, it is recommended that you attend weekly or bi-weekly until you feel you are healthier and more able to manage the imbalances on your own.

The effects of regular Personal Energy Care & Spirit Wellness treatments are cumulative and take place at a very deep cellular level. When you honour the well-being of your soul by consciously working towards better health and wellness, you may experience a greater sense of overall health and well-being.

What is Complementary Therapy?

Complementary Therapy is a term used to describe different types of treatments or practices that are not considered conventional Western medicine, and are used to support conventional medicine. Complementary therapy often seeks to support the mental, emotional, physical and spiritual balance and well-being of an individual by looking at the person as a whole rather than symptoms alone. All of the energy healing modalities that I practice are complementary therapies.

What is Reiki?

Rei (ray): Universal

Ki (key): Life Force Energy

Reiki is a Japanese word that means universal or vital life force energy.

The practice of Reiki is a Japanese energy healing technique that promotes stress reduction and relaxation. A Reiki practitioner channels the flow of vital life force energy to a recipient by the laying of hands on the body or by having the hands off the body and intentionally directing the flow of energy towards the recipient. The recipient naturally draws in the Reiki which flows to where it is needed most, and addresses the root cause of a symptom or illness that is ready to heal. The innate wisdom of Reiki provides the recipient with a profound sense of calm and relaxation, and helps to promote healing from within. Reiki is safe and gentle, and can be used in conjunction with other treatments and can be offered to anyone or anything. Children, plants and animals respond especially well to Reiki!

The following Reiki studies and reviews have presented:

2017 review published in the Journal of Evidence-Based Complementary & Alternative Medicine, Reiki is Better Than Placebo and Has Broad Potential as a Complementary Health Therapy: "Reiki is better than placebo in activating the parasympathetic nervous system, as measured by reduced heart rate, reduced blood pressure, and increased heart rate variability. For patients with chronic health conditions, Reiki has been found to be more effective than placebo for reducing pain, anxiety, and depression, and for improving self-esteem and quality of life. According to the neurovisceral integration model and the polyvagal theory, these effects are due to higher parasympathetic nervous system activity, mediated via the vagus nerve. This understanding suggests that Reiki has the potential to provide valuable support for a broad range of chronic health conditions."

2018 Pub Med Meta-Analysis on The effect of reiki on pain: A meta-analysis: "Results: The result obtained after the final Reiki application was evaluated in VAS pain score. When Reiki (n = 104) group was compared with control group (n = 108), standardized mean difference was observed to be -0.927 (95% CI: -1.867 to 0.0124). Reiki was observed to cause a statistically significant decrease in VAS score. Conclusion: Consequently, this meta-analysis revealed that Reiki was an effective approach in relieving the pain."

2019 research published in The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, A Large-Scale Effectiveness Trial of Reiki for Physical and Psychological Health: "Results: A total of N = 1411 Reiki sessions were conducted and included in the analysis. Statistically significant improvements were observed for all outcome measures, including positive affect, negative affect, pain, drowsiness, tiredness, nausea, appetite, shortness of breath, anxiety, depression, and overall well-being (all p-values <0.001). Conclusions: The results from this large-scale multisite effectiveness trial suggest that a single session of Reiki improves multiple variables related to physical and psychological health."

What is Crystal Healing and Crystal Reiki?

Crystal Healing has been revered by many ancient civilizations throughout history, and these practices have withstood the test of time. Crystals can be used in a number of ways for many purposes. In this context, crystals are placed on or around the body to assist with energy healing. Here's how it works:

According to physics, everything is energy, all energy vibrates and all energy is fluid and changeable. Things you can see and hear have a vibration, as do things you are not able to see or hear. Radio and wi-fi waves have a vibration. Music has a vibration. Even objects that appear to be solid and stationary have a vibration. Due to varying composition, everything has a different vibrational frequency. The composition and structure of something impacts the fluidity and changeability of the energetic state (vibrational frequency) of that thing.

Crystals are minerals composed of atoms, molecules or ions, arranged in a precisely ordered, repeating, geometric pattern, making them an extremely stable solid. As they are geometrically perfect at the molecular level, crystals have the lowest tendency towards energetic shift or change. The stability of their structure also lends to the high amplitude of their energy, as do other factors such as their chemical composition and visible light (colour).

In contrast, a human body is not formed in one exceptionally precise, geometric structure. Humans are a collection of different elemental structures, making up our organs, tissues, cells, etc., that each vibrate at a different frequency (e.g., the heart has its own frequency, the brain has its own frequency, the liver has its own frequency, etc.).

With so many varied elemental composition levels throughout the body (including water), humans have a much greater susceptibility towards energetic shift or change. Depending on what we are exposed to, energetic shifts or changes may leave us feeling more energized or they may leave us feeling depleted or somewhere in between.

Entrainment is a scientific term described as the process of shifting or changing the pattern or rhythm of something to the same pattern or rhythm of an external influence within its environment. When a crystal is placed on or near the body, its vibrational frequency can shift our frequencies to match those of the crystal.

When used with intention, you also incorporate the power of your mind to help align your energy with the energy of a crystal and your desired outcome.

Crystal Reiki is the synergy of channeled vital life force energy and the high vibrational frequencies of crystals to help the body and mind focus on certain areas of the body or particular conditions or levels of awareness that are ready to heal.

What are Yin and Restorative Yoga?

Yin and Restorative Yoga are slower paced, yoga practices that focus on bringing the body, the the mind, emotions and spirit into balance and harmony through the use of longer held shapes and poses (3+ minutes). The longer holds of these poses allow for deeper body openings, which help to relax the body, calm the mind, reduce stress, and restore balance and harmony to the body's natural systems.

Although seemingly comparable practices, yin is more of an intentional deep stretching practice that may elicit greater sensation, and may or may not include the use of props, while restorative yoga is a very relaxing and gentle practice, where the deeper openings are accessed through passive, prop-supported poses, that are not intended to elicit a strong stretching sensation.

Restorative yoga may not be as physically demanding as other yoga styles, but its benefits lie in its ability to nurture relaxation and healing. A Restorative yoga practice is suitable for people of all fitness levels, including beginners, and can be particularly useful for those seeking relief from the stressors of modern life or recovering from injury or illness.

Both of these practices are carried out on a yoga mat, with the entire body remaining close to the ground. Props may include blankets, cork and foam blocks, straps, bolsters, sandbags, pillows, eyebags and chairs. Although there is a great amount of stillness in each of these practices, you may anticipate experiences of bending, twisting, sitting, kneeling, working from a quadruped position or laying down on the floor.

From Somere K, Munkevics M, Krams R, Racˇ a G, Luoto S and Krams I (2024) The effect of yin yoga intervention on state and trait anxiety during the COVID-19 pandemic. Front. Psychiatry 15:1345455. doi: 10.3389/fpsyt.2024.1345455Introduction: Although some findings indicate that yoga can reduce stress and anxiety, many studies present mixed results. The potential of yoga interventions to alleviate anxiety, including the mechanisms and boundary conditions by which it does so, is an under-researched topic. Anxiety is often divided into "state anxiety" and "trait anxiety," the former being a temporary reaction to stressful events, while the latter is a more stable personality feature that responds to adverse situations or perceived threats. Materials and methods: This study investigates whether a yin yoga intervention delivered online reduces state anxiety immediately after each yoga session and whether the anxiety levels are significantly lower at the end of the 10-week yoga intervention than at the beginning of the study. We also predicted no effect of yin yoga intervention on trait anxiety. The study was conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic when participants (N = 48 Latvian women) experienced heightened anxiety levels. Results: This study shows that a ten-week online yin yoga intervention significantly reduced state anxiety in the intervention group compared with the control group. State anxiety levels also significantly decreased after each yin yoga session, providing more support for the anxiety-reducing effect of yin yoga. In contrast, yoga participation did not cause differences in trait anxiety between the control and intervention groups, even though trait anxiety decreased in the intervention group and increased in the control group over the study period. Conclusion: The positive effects of yin yoga on state anxiety indicate the potential of yin yoga intervention as a first-line treatment to control and reduce state anxiety, with possible additional effects on trait anxiety.

What is Hatha Yoga?

Hatha Yoga is an active effort practice that creates shifts in the natural systems of the body through mindful movement and experiencing the body in different shapes and poses. Time is taken to set up in each shape or pose, to be in each shape or pose and to transition from one shape or pose to another. Props and different relationships to gravity may be used to assist the body in moving in different ways, experiencing the shapes or poses in different ways, offering support and stability, finding deeper openings or to bring awareness to different aspects of the body. This practice may involve standing, bending, twisting, squatting, sitting, kneeling, working from a quadriped position or laying down on the floor.

From Gothe NP, Keswani RK, McAuley E. Yoga practice improves executive function by attenuating stress levels. Biol Psychol. 2016 Dec;121(Pt A):109-116. doi: 10.1016/j.biopsycho.2016.10.010. Epub 2016 Oct 26. PMID: 27794449Background: Prolonged activation of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal system is thought to have deleterious effects on brain function. Neuroendocrine studies suggest that brain exposure to higher cortisol concentrations contribute to cognitive deficits as we age. Mind-body techniques such as yoga have shown to improve stress levels by restoring the body's sympathetic-parasympathetic balance. The objective of this study was to determine whether yoga practice moderated the stress response resulting in improved executive function. Methods: Sedentary community dwelling older adults (N=118, Mean age=62.02) were randomized to an 8-week yoga intervention or a stretching control group. At baseline and following 8 weeks, all participants completed measures of executive function, self-reported stress and anxiety and provided saliva samples before and after cognitive testing to assess cortisol. Results: Yoga participants showed improved accuracy on executive function measures and an attenuated cortisol response compared to their stretching counterparts who showed increased cortisol levels and poor cognitive performance at follow up. The change in cortisol levels as well as self-reported stress and anxiety levels predicted performance on the running span task, n-back working memory and task switching paradigm (β's=0.27-0.38, p's≤0.05 for yoga and β's=-0.37-0.47, p's≤0.01 for stretching control). Conclusion: Eight weeks of regular yoga practice resulted in improved working memory performance that was mediated by an attenuated response to stress as measured by self-report stress and objective salivary cortisol measurements. This trial offers evidence for non-traditional physical activity interventions such as yoga that may be helpful in restoring HPA balance in older adults, thereby preventing cognitive decline.

What is Sound Wellness®?

From de Witte M, Spruit A, van Hooren S, Moonen X, Stams GJ. Effects of music interventions on stress-related outcomes: a systematic review and two meta-analyses. Health Psychol Rev. 2020 Jun;14(2):294-324. doi: 10.1080/17437199.2019.1627897. Epub 2019 Jul 15. PMID: 31167611: Music interventions are used for stress reduction in a variety of settings because of the positive effects of music listening on both physiological arousal (e.g., heart rate, blood pressure, and hormonal levels) and psychological stress experiences (e.g., restlessness, anxiety, and nervousness). To summarize the growing body of empirical research, two multilevel meta-analyses of 104 RCTs, containing 327 effect sizes and 9,617 participants, were performed to assess the strength of the effects of music interventions on both physiological and psychological stress-related outcomes, and to test the potential moderators of the intervention effects. Results showed that music interventions had an overall significant effect on stress reduction in both physiological (d = .380) and psychological (d = .545) outcomes. Further, moderator analyses showed that the type of outcome assessment moderated the effects of music interventions on stress-related outcomes. Larger effects were found on heart rate (d = .456), compared to blood pressure (d = .343) and hormone levels (d = .349). Implications for stress-reducing music interventions are discussed.

What is a Reiki Drum Journey & Sound Bath?

A Reiki Drum Journey is the harmonious blend of Reiki as it permeates the rhythmic waves of the beating drum, infusing you with healing energy. A Sound Bath is the intentional use of mindfully selected instruments to create frequencies, tones, vibrations, rhythms and patterns. These practices are mindfully blended with the intention to create energetic shifts in the body's natural energy systems and help return the body, mind, spirit and emotions to a state of harmony.

A Reiki Drum Journey & Sound Bath is an immersive sensory experience. The instruments are played in the space and around your body. You will be able to hear and sense and feel the effects that Reiki and Sound have on your body, mind, emotions and spirit.

During a Reiki Drum Journey & Sound Bath people often shift into a relaxed and dreamlike state of consciousness. The relaxation encourages your body to shift into the rest and digest mode of the parasympathetic nervous system, and awaken your body's natural ability to heal, while the dreamlike state of consciousness whisks you away on a meditative journey. It is often said that while journeying, a person may tap into the inner workings of their body, mind and emotions, as they reconnect to the spirit of their true essence.

During a Reiki Drum Journey & Sound Bath™ you will experience Gongs, Chimes, Crystal & Tibetan Singing Bowls, the Frame Drum, the Ocean Drum and Song Pods as they are played in the space and around your body.

"The consciousness of the planet is leading humanity to the re-discovery of an ancient and forgotten healing art in which the utilization of crystals is prominent. Dis-ease and disorder in one's life usually entails lessons which will allow one to release the burdens of unconsciousness. Although one must ultimately heal oneself, the healing process may be facilitated by the catalytic presence of many things. To experience dis-ease is to experience a total or partial disconnection from wholeness, a loss of awareness of the innate and universal source of perfection. The members of the mineralogical kingdom have been used for centuries to act as catalysts and to assist one in becoming re-united with that source."
